Microwave Not Working? 7 Common Problems You Can Fix Yourself
A microwave is the heart of a fast-paced kitchen, making everything from reheating leftovers to cooking meals quick and easy. That is, until it suddenly stops working, leaving you with a cold dinner and a lot of frustration.
The good news is that you don’t always need to rush out and buy a new one or call an expensive technician. Many common microwave problems have simple solutions you can handle yourself. As your appliance experts in Nigeria, the team at DISPASAL is here to guide you through troubleshooting the most frequent issues.
1. The Problem: The Microwave Won’t Turn On At All
Possible Causes:
- Power Supply: The outlet it’s plugged into has no power.
- Power Cord: The microwave’s power cord is damaged or frayed.
- Internal Fuse: An internal fuse has blown, often due to a power surge.
What to Do:
- Check the Outlet: First, ensure the microwave is plugged in securely. Test the wall socket by plugging in another small appliance you know works, like a phone charger or a lamp. In Nigeria, power fluctuations can sometimes trip a socket, so this is always the first check.
- Inspect the Circuit Breaker: Check your home’s main distribution board to see if a circuit breaker has tripped. If it has, flip it back on.
- Examine the Cord: If the outlet works, unplug the microwave and carefully inspect the power cord for any visible damage, cuts, or burn marks. A damaged cord is a safety hazard and must be replaced.
- Call for Help: If these steps don’t work, the issue is likely an internal one, such as a blown main fuse or a faulty control board. For your safety, this requires a professional.
2. The Problem: It Runs, But My Food Stays Cold
Possible Causes:
- Demo” Mode: (The Silent Thief) Many modern digital microwaves (Samsung, LG, Panasonic) have a Demo Mode or Showroom Mode. This is for shops to display the lights and turntable without actually generating heat. The microwave might be accidentally set to a demonstration mode. The “Demo Mode” Trap
- Defrost: If you select a Defrost setting, the microwave will intentionally run at very low power to thaw ice without “cooking” the meat. Some customers expect steaming hot food while the machine is still in the defrost cycle.
- Low voltage: Microwaves are “power hungry.” If the electricity from the grid (NEPA/PHCN) or your generator is low (below 200V), the microwave might have enough power to spin the motor and turn on the light, but not enough power to “kickstart” the magnetron (the part that makes the heat).
- Door Switch: The door isn’t closing properly, or the latch mechanism is faulty. Microwaves have 3 or 4 safety switches. If the door isn’t shut 100%—even if it looks closed—the machine will spin but won’t heat for safety. Give the door a firm push.
- Internal Part Failure: The magnetron, diode, or capacitor (the parts that generate heat) has failed.
What to Do:
- Check the Door: Open and close the door firmly. The microwave will not heat if it senses the door is even slightly ajar. Listen for a distinct “click” to ensure the latches are engaging.
- Ensure you have selected “Micro” or “High Power” for standard heating. If the machine is waiting for a “Defrost” cycle to finish before it starts full heating, give it time or change the setting to manual.
- Try using a high-quality Stabilizer (at least 2000W/2KVA) specifically for your kitchen appliances. If your generator is small (below 3.5KVA), it may struggle to power a microwave properly.
- Disable Demo Mode: Check your user manual (or search for it online by model number) to see how to turn off “Demo” or “Control Lock” mode. This setting allows the lights and turntable to work without producing any heat.
- Call a Professional: If it still doesn’t heat, the problem is almost certainly a high-voltage component like the magnetron. This is the part that creates the microwaves. Do not attempt to fix this yourself. It’s a dangerous job best left to a certified technician.
I just wanted to let you know that you can never open a microwave yourself. Even when unplugged, the internal “Capacitor” holds enough electricity to give a lethal shock. This is the one appliance you MUST leave for a professional.
3. The Problem: The Turntable Plate Won’t Spin
Possible Causes:
- Misalignment: The glass plate is not seated correctly on the roller guide.
- Dirty Rollers: Food debris is blocking the roller guide underneath the plate.
- Faulty Motor: The motor that spins the turntable has burned out.
What to Do:
- Clean and Reseat: Remove the glass plate and the plastic roller ring. Clean them both, along with the inside floor of the microwave, to remove any food particles. Place the roller ring back in its track and carefully reseat the glass plate, ensuring it locks into the motor coupler in the center.
- Check the Motor: If it still won’t spin, the turntable motor likely needs to be replaced. This is a relatively simple repair for a technician.
4. The Problem: It’s Making Strange Noises (Buzzing, Humming, Grinding)
Possible Causes:
- Grinding: An issue with the turntable motor or roller guide.
- Loud Humming/Buzzing: A sign of a serious electrical fault, likely with the magnetron or diode.
What to Do:
- Check the Turntable: If the noise is a grinding sound, follow the steps in the previous point to clean and reseat the plate and rollers.
- STOP and Unplug: If you hear a loud, irregular humming or buzzing, stop using the microwave immediately. This often indicates a high-voltage component is failing and can be dangerous. Unplug the appliance and call a technician.
5. The Problem: There Are Sparks Inside (Arcing)
Possible Causes:
- Metal Objects: You’ve accidentally put metal foil, a metallic-trimmed plate, or a fork inside.
- Damaged Waveguide Cover: The small cardboard-like or plastic cover on the inside wall is spattered with food and burning.
- Chipped Interior: The paint inside the microwave has chipped, exposing the metal underneath.
What to Do:
- Stop Immediately: Turn off the microwave at once.
- Remove Metal: Check for and remove any metal items.
- Inspect the Waveguide Cover: This small square cover protects the microwave’s electronics. If it’s burnt or has food stuck to it, it can cause sparks. Gently clean it or, if it’s damaged, replace it.
- Professional Service: If the paint inside is chipped or the sparking continues after cleaning, do not use it. It needs to be serviced by a professional.
6. The Problem: The Buttons on the Keypad Are Not Responding
Possible Causes:
- Control Lock: The child lock or control lock feature is activated.
- Needs a Reset: The control panel has a temporary glitch.
- Faulty Panel: The touchpad itself has worn out or is damaged.
What to Do:
- Perform a Hard Reset: The simplest trick is to unplug the microwave from the wall, wait for a full minute, and then plug it back in. This can often reset the control board and fix the issue.
- Disable Control Lock: Look for a button that says “Lock” or has a padlock icon. Press and hold it for 3-5 seconds to see if this deactivates the lock.
- Call for Service: If the buttons still don’t respond, the touchpad or main control board needs to be replaced by a technician.
7. The Problem: The Interior Light is Out
Possible Causes:
- A burnt-out light bulb.
- A faulty light socket or wiring issue.
What to Do:
- Replace the Bulb: In many models, you can replace the bulb yourself. Unplug the microwave and consult your user manual for the bulb type and location.
- Seek Technical Help: If a new bulb doesn’t work, there may be an issue with the socket or the wiring, which a technician should handle.
Safety First: When to Stop and Call a Professional
While you can fix many issues yourself, microwaves are not standard appliances. They contain a high-voltage capacitor that can store a lethal electrical charge for hours or even days after being unplugged.
ALWAYS call a qualified repair technician for:
- Any problem requiring the outer case to be removed.
- Replacing the magnetron, capacitor, diode, or internal fuses.
- Loud, buzzing noises.
- Repairs to chipped interior paint.
